What does "indexed" mean? How do you decide which books to index? Why can't I search some of my books?
CookShelf lets you search for recipes across all your cookbooks, but only indexed books are searchable.
What is indexing?
Indexing is the process of adding a book's recipes, ingredients, and metadata to our searchable database. Once a book is indexed, you can search for recipes by ingredient, dish type, and more.
How do I know if a book is indexed?
When you view a book on your shelf:
- Indexed books show a recipe count and table of contents with recipes and page numbers
- Non-indexed books display a message saying "This book is not yet indexed" with a button to request indexing for that book.
Why aren't all books indexed?
Indexing is a manual process. We prioritize indexing based on how many members own a book and how many requests it receives – so books that are popular in our community move up the queue faster.
Can I request a book to be indexed?
Yes! If you have an unindexed book, tap the "Request Index" button. We'll add it to our queue and email you when it's ready.
